Capítulo 2: Cafés, restaurantes e pedidos na rua: demonstrativos e plurais
Felipe Nascimento Rosa e Luiza Nascimento Rosa
Meta do capítulo. Ao final, você faz pedidos educados em cafés, restaurantes e lojas usando Can I get…?, I’ll have… e I’d like… (sem soar rude com “I want”), aponta objetos perto e longe no singular e no plural (this, that, these, those), e forma plurais regulares e os sete plurais irregulares essenciais (people, men, women, children).
Cena
- Barista
- Hi there! What can I get started for you today?
- Lucas
- Hi! Can I get a medium latte with oat milk, please?
- Barista
- Sure thing! Hot or iced?
- Lucas
- Hot, please. And how much are those sandwiches on the top shelf over there?
- Barista
- Those are eight fifty each. We have turkey, cheese, and roast beef.
- Lucas
- That sounds great. I’ll have a turkey sandwich, and I’d also like two of these chocolate cookies right here.
- Barista
- Got it. Look — there are a lot of people in line today, so the kitchen is a bit busy, but your sandwich will be ready in two minutes. Is this for here or to go?
- Lucas
- To go, please.
- Barista
- Your total is twenty-one seventy-five. You can tap your card right here on the screen.
- Lucas
- Here you go. Have a great day!
Em português: Olá! O que posso preparar para você hoje? / Oi!
Observe que Lucas não diz “I want” nem “Give me”: ele usa Can I get…, I’ll have… e I’d like…. Além disso, usa these para os cookies perto da mão dele, those para os sanduíches lá longe na prateleira, e That sounds great para reagir ao que o atendente acabou de dizer.
2. A armadilha do português
|---|---|---|
| Eu quero um café, por favor. | Can I get a coffee, please? / I’d like a coffee. | |
| Eu vou querer o sanduíche. | I’ll have the sandwich, please. | |
| (Reagindo:) Isto é ótimo! | That’s great! / That sounds great! | |
| Três mulheres e duas crianças. | Three women and two children. |
1. “I want” no balcão soa rude. Com garçons e atendentes, substitua “I want” pela tríade educada: Can I get…? (ou Can I have…?), I’ll have… (“Eu vou querer…”) e I’d like… (“Eu gostaria de…”).
That: That’s awesome!, That makes sense!, That’s expensive!.
3. Plurais irregulares proíbem -s. Palavras como person, man, woman e child têm plurais próprios (people, men, women, children) e nunca recebem -s no final.
| PERTO DE MIM (RIGHT HERE) | LONGE DE MIM (OVER THERE) |
|---|---|
| This coffee is hot. (1 item perto) | That sandwich over there looks good. (1 item longe) |
| These cookies right here are fresh. (2+ itens perto) | Those tables outside are free. (2+ itens longe) |
| How much is this shirt? | How much is that jacket? |
| How much are these shoes? | How much are those glasses? |
Perguntas:
4. Em 30 segundos
Em 30 Segundos
1. Tríade dos Pedidos: No balcão, peça com Can I get [item], please?; na mesa decidindo do cardápio, use I’ll have [item], please; em qualquer situação polida, I’d like [item], please.
2. Demonstrativos (Apontar):
Perto (Aqui): Singular = this (dês) | Plural = these (dííz).
Longe (Lá / O que o outro disse): Singular = that (dét) | Plural = those (dôuz).
3. Plurais Regulares: Regra geral +s (cars, days); após -s, -sh, -ch, -x, -z, -o, adicione -es (boxes, buses, sandwiches, watches, potatoes); após consoante + y, troque por -ies (city → cities, company → companies); após -f / -fe, troque por -ves (wife → wives, shelf → shelves, knife → knives).
4. Os 7 Plurais Irregulares (Sem -s!):person → people, man → men, woman → women (atenção ao som: uú-man no singular e uí-min no plural!), child → children, foot → feet, tooth → teeth, mouse → mice.
|---|---|---|
| 1. Chegando / Pedindo | What can I get for you? / Are you ready to order? | Can I get a latte, please? / I’ll have the grilled salmon. |
| 2. Água (Sem gás vs. Com gás) | Still or sparkling water? | Still water, please. (sem gás) / Sparkling water. (com gás — nunca diga |
| 3. Aqui ou para viagem? | For here or to go? (UK: Eat in or takeaway?) | For here, please. / To go, please. |
| 4. Encerrando o pedido | Anything else for you today? | No, I’m good, thanks! That’s all. (Estou bem, obrigado! É só isso). |
| 5. Pedindo a conta | (Você chama o garçom) | Excuse me, could we get the check (UK: the bill), please? |
5.2 Os Plurais Irregulares e Palavras Sempre Plurais
| SINGULAR (USA IS / THIS / THAT) | PLURAL (USA ARE / THESE / THOSE) | EXEMPLO REAL E ALERTA DE CONCORDÂNCIA |
|---|---|---|
| a person | people (pí-pôl) | There are twenty people here. (People é sempre plural: People are nice!). |
| a man / a woman | men / women (mén / uí-min) | Those two women are directors. |
| a child | children (tchíl-drãn) | How many children do they have? (Nunca diga |
| (Só existem no plural) | glasses, sunglasses, jeans, pants, scissors | Objetos de duas partes são sempre plurais: Where are my glasses? These jeans are new! (Para 1 unidade: a pair of jeans). |
5.3 Como ler preços no balcão em 2 segundos
Na fila do café, quase ninguém diz “twenty-one dollars and seventy-five cents”.
$8.50 = eight fifty
$21.75 = twenty-one seventy-five
$10.05 = ten oh-five (o zero antes de centavos lê-se oh).
6. Frases de ouro
| INGLÊS | PORTUGUÊS NATURAL |
|---|---|
| Can I get a large black coffee to go, please? |
| I’ll have the chicken salad and a bottle of still water. |
| How much are those backpacks on the top shelf? |
| These muffins right here look delicious! | Estes muffins bem aqui parecem deliciosos! |
| — Anything else? — No, I’m good, thanks. That’s all. | — Mais alguma coisa? — Não, estou bem, obrigado. É só isso. |
| There are ten people in our team — five men and five women. |
| Excuse me, could we get the check, please? |
| You can tap your card right here on the screen. |
7. Treino em quatro degraus
Treino
Degrau 1. Reconheça. Escolha a opção correta entre parênteses.
- — What would you like to drink? — ____ an iced tea, please. (I will want / I’ll have)
- How much ____ sunglasses right here, and how much ____ watch over there? (is this / are these) (is that / are those)
- — The flight to Miami is only $300 today! — Wow, ____ is a great price! (this / that)
- How many ____ work in these two ____? (person / people) (companys / companies)
- My brother has two ____, and our two ____ are teachers. (childs / children) (wifes / wives)
- Can I get a bottle of ____ water, please? (gas / sparkling)
- — Anything else for you? — No, ____, thanks! (I’m good / I want nothing)
- Where ____ my new jeans? (is / are)
Degrau 2. Complete. Passe os substantivos para o plural ou complete com this, that, these, those.
- I’d like two ____ (sandwich) and three ____ (box) of tea, please.
- How much are ____ shoes right here in my hand?
- Who is ____ man standing over there by the door?
- There are four ____ (woman) and three ____ (man) in the meeting room.
- Big ____ (city) usually have good subways.
- Put the books on those two ____ (shelf), please.
- — The meeting is canceled! — ____'s great news!
- ____ cookies right here are for you, and ____ ones over there are for Sarah.
Degrau 3. Produza.
- Escreva uma frase usando people, children e cities.
- Diga ao garçom que você está satisfeito (I’m good, thanks) e peça a conta educadamente.
Degrau 4. Corrija as seis erradas e aponte a certa.
- Give me a coffee with milk, and I want two sandwichs, please!
- This shoes right here are very comfortable, but that ones over there are small.
- There are three womans and four mans waiting for the elevator.
- How much is those backpacks on the top shelf?
- Can I get a water with gas, please?
- How many boxs do those two persons have?
- I’ll have the grilled salmon and a sparkling water, please.
8. O erro típico
O erro mais comum em lojas e restaurantes é misturar singular e plural nos demonstrativos (dizendo this shoes em vez de these shoes) e esquecer que people, women, men e children já são plurais (dizendo peoples ou womans).
Erros Típicos
| ERRADO | CERTO | POR QUÊ |
|---|---|---|
| Can I get a coffee, please? / I’d like a tea. | “I want” e “Give me” soam como ordens rudes no balcão. | |
| I’ll have the steak, please. | Para escolher do cardápio, o natural é I’ll have (ou I’ll go with). | |
| These shoes are nice. | Shoes é plural, exigindo o plural these (perto) ou those (longe). | |
| Three women and two children. | Plurais irregulares nunca recebem -s. | |
| Sparkling water. | |
| — That’s great! |
9. Retorno
1. Do Capítulo 1. This is a new company. (b) That woman is an executive. (c) This child is hungry.
2. Do Capítulo 1.
3. Pronúncia. Qual é a diferença de som final entre this (1 coisa) e these (2 ou mais coisas)?
| QUANDO | O QUE FAZER |
|---|---|
| Dia 1 | Leia a Cena em voz alta praticando a entonação de Can I get…, I’ll have… e I’d like…. |
| Dia 3 | Olhe ao redor do seu quarto ou escritório e diga 5 frases com this / these (perto) e 5 com that / those (longe). |
| Dia 7 | Refaça o Degrau 4 sem olhar o gabarito. |
10. Resumo e “já consigo”
